Donald Sowers, 91

Donald Gene Sowers, 91, Henderson, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.
Don was born Jan. 20, 1933, in Mills County, the son of Glen and Edith (Rumsey) Sowers. He attended Boxelder Country School and graduated from Henderson High School in 1951. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served for four years during the Korean War.
Don was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mary “Frances” Elkins on Sept. 1, 1957, in Emerson. To this union three children were born, Alan, Sally, and Paul. Don worked for the Natural Gas Pipeline, retiring after 30 plus years. He also farmed, which was his passion. He was very good at farming. Don also enjoyed feeding cattle and going to livestock auctions. And he loved spending time with the grandkids. Don was a member of the Henderson American Legion Post for over 71 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Mary “Frances” Sowers; and brothers, Lee, Fred, and Carroll Sowers.
Survivors include his children, Alan Sowers and wife Paige of Dallas Center; Sally Shearer and husband Stan of Glenwood; and Paul Sowers and special friend Cindy Murray of Henderson; grandchildren, Chelsea Sowers of London, England; Nicole Stamer and husband Reid of Cedar Rapids; Jacob Sowers of Chicago, Ill.; Chase Sowers of Des Moines; Bradley Shearer and wife Morgan of Omaha, Neb.; and Natalie Bryson and husband Joe of Omaha, Neb.; great-granddaughter, Magnolia Bryson of Omaha, Neb.; brother, Bryan Sowers of Henderson; brothers-in-law, Arthur “Bud” Elkins and wife Bonnie of Emerson, and Keith Elkins and wife Sandra of San Angelo, Texas; sister-in-law, Rose Stogsdill of Henderson, Nev.; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2024, at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak. Burial will be at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Mills County. Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Nelson-Boylan LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Henderson Volunteer Fire Department or the Henderson American Legion.
