No. 9: Walker scores a medal for the boys
Red Oak's tennis team also had success on the boys side as Pete Walker took home seventh place in singles at the 1A Boys State Tournament in Waterloo, May 28.
Walker defeated Grinnell's Tim Kahl 6-2 and 6-2 to give Red Oak boys' tennis their first medal since 2007 when Beau Browning and Travis Nelson finished sixth in doubles.
Walker is the first singles medalist for Red Oak since Kirk Schuler in 1999.
Walker started out the tournament May 27 with a first round win over Peter Rietgraf of Ballard 6-2 and 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Walker was eliminated by eventual state champion James McManus of Waterloo Columbus, 6-0 and 6-1.
The sophomore's day wasn't done as he played Nate Ohms of Harlan. Walker defeated Ohms 6-2 and 6-4.
In the consolation semifinals, Walker lost to Mike Ahlers of LeMars, 6-4 and 6-0, putting him in the seventh place match against Kahl.
Walker wasn't alone at the state tournament as Craig White and Jordan Nelson competed in 1A doubles. White and Nelson lost both of their matches. They first lost to Dubuque Wahlert's Brandon Schneider and Tom Runde 6-0 and 6-1. Then in the consolation bracket, they lost to Aplington-Parkersburg's Winkey and Haugsted, 6-2 and 6-2.
