No. 4 Maher’s death rocks the Essex community

ESSEX—Tragedy struck the Essex community last summer when student-athlete Tara Maher was killed in a car accident, July 14.

Maher, along with teammate Haley Fundermann, was traveling to a volleyball camp in Council Bluffs when Maher's car crossed the centerline and struck a tractor-trailer.
Maher was airlifted to Nebraska Medical Center, but died later that evening.
Fundermann was sent to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital for minor injuries, but was released later that day.
The driver of the trailer, was not injured in the tractor.
Maher had celebrated her 17th birthday the previous day.
She competed in multiple sports, including basketball, track, softball and volleyball.
While receiving accolades in academics, being a member of the National Honor Society, she was also named All-Conference in several sports.
To honor Maher, the Essex football and volleyball teams wore a decal on their uniforms for the fall sports season.
