No. 2 Mellott wins first ever state bowling title

DES MOINES—With 2009-10 being the first season of regulated state boys' bowling, Taylor Mellott has the rare honor of being the first individual state champion in Iowa High School history.

Mellott was crowned the 1A state champion on Feb. 25 at the Plaza Lanes in Des Moines, scoring a 753. In his first two games, Mellott bowled a 277 and 276. Mellott came close to scoring 300 in the first game, as he was perfect in his first eight frames.
With Mellott's win, the boys team finished in second place with a team score of 3,149. Red Oak was runner-up to Dubuque-Wahlert, who scored a 3,193.
The girls' bowling team also competed, finishing eighth in the 1A meet. Brianna Nowels was the top finisher for Red Oak, taking home eighth place with a score of 385.
