Youth Advisory Council

Members of the Mayors Youth Advisory Council met for the first time in the IJAG classroom of the Red Oak Junior/Senior High School Wednesday, Nov. 9.
Founding members of the group are Bella Glassel, senior; Cyrus Mensen, junior; Hailey Rydberg, junior; Jonah Thomason, sophomore; Joselyn McCunn, junior; and Sabastian “Baz” Clear, junior.
Mayor Shawnna Silvius welcomed the students and introduced two mentors for the council; Cynthia Bangston and Dave Dimmitt. Following introductions, Silvius provided an overview of the program and explained to the students what she requests of them.
In addition to thinking outside the box, Silvius told the students she values their advice; as they are the future of Red Oak.
The next meeting of the group will be Nov. 30, with Major General Christopher P. Hughes as the guest speaker. Hughes will be talking about different personalities, emotional intelligence and how to read a room. There will also be a round table discussion on “What is Civility and How to Be Civil.”
Students were asked by Silvius to conduct ‘windshield tours’ of the community and come back to the next meeting with assets and opportunities they see.
The meetings take place for a minimum of one hour, every couple weeks through the end of the school year.
Future sessions include topics on cyberbullying,, financing community projects through grants, foundations and government agencies and Building Pride vs. Vandalism.
