Rain barrel class to be held July 28 in Shenandoah

Golden Hills RC&D and Iowa Western Community College are hosting a Do-It-Yourself Rain Barrel class at the Shenandoah campus with local instructor Jamie Smidt Fowler.

Rain barrels are used to collect and store rainfall that can be used later to water lawns and gardens. They reduce runoff and slow the flow of water into storm sewer systems and waterways, which can improve water quality, and reduce erosion and flash flooding.

The class costs $75, which includes supplies, and participants will get to take their own rain barrel home at the end of the session. The class will start at 5:00pm on Thursday, July 28 and last until about 6:30pm. Registration deadline is July 21.

The class is part of Iowa Western and Golden Hills’ sustainability and traditional skills series. Full details and registration are available at goldenhillsrcd.org/iwcc.
