Quilt of Valor for Boyington
Doug Boyington of Emerson was honored with a Quilt of Valor at the Essex Veterans Day Assembly Nov. 11. Boyington served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era from 1964 until 1968. He was stationed in the Mediterranean Sea on both the USS Uvalde and the USS Guadalcanal as a signalman. Upon leaving the military, Doug held the rank of E-4 and has several medals and awards. Present to assist with the award of this quilt were two of his grandsons, Philip and Bradley Franks, Essex history instructor Steve Schuster, and Carol York and Becky Streitenberger with Quilts of Valor. Denise Bryant of the Page County Veterans Affairs sent a book on Vietnam and a Certificate of Appreciation to be awarded to Boyington for his service to his country.
