Kotter chosen as new city administrator
The City of Red Oak has a new administrator.
At a special meeting on Aug. 20, the council approved a resolution approving an employment agreement with Lisa Kotter. Kotter visited the community on Aug. 16 and had a meet and greet at the FiveOne8 before taking part in interviews at the Red Oak Public Library on Aug. 17.
Red Oak Mayor Shawnna Silvius made the official announcement of Kotter’s hiring Wednesday morning, and urged the community to welcome Kotter.
“With 30 years’ experience, a master’s degree in public administration and many accolades, Lisa brings a great deal of experience, knowledge, understanding of Iowa, all aspects of managing city operations for a community our size, and backbone to this position,” Silvius said. “I’ve spent a good deal of time getting to know her and I am grateful for how approachable, professional, intelligent, yet humble and relatable she is.”
Silvius said being around her and learning about her has put her at ease in the city’s long search for an administrator.
“In talking with her, one thing I think she will bring to this position that most will find unexpected, is her interest and willingness to support community betterment projects and causes whether through completing a grant to financially provide a needed amenity such as a freezer to benefit the food pantry or a way of enhancing other local causes,” advised Silvius. “If she sees a grant and has time, she’ll be applying This is the icing on the cake. She’s been successful with many grants for all sorts of infrastructure and economic development projects throughout her career, and she’s definitely a dedicated worker.”
Silvius added she was certain that when Kotter came to the community, she would hit the ground running, but do it with grace and ease.
“Her motto is transparency and focusing on core things like building trust and mutual respect. I’m looking forward to working with and learning from her; and I cannot wait to see what all we will accomplish together with staff and council,” commented Silvius.
Kotter said she’s pleased for this chance to serve the Red Oak community.
“I would like to thank Mayor Silvius and the City Council for the invitation and opportunity to serve the Red Oak community. I look forward to being there in September and getting to know the team and community. I will work hard to serve and lead with care and grace to all those who call Red Oak home,” Kotter stated.
Kotter’s first day will be Wednesday, Sept. 18. Silvius said several members of city leadership will be at the League of Cities Conference that week, and the next week Kotter will be at the International City Managers Association conference in Pittsburg, Penn., so the city will plan to host a welcome reception for the public sometime the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 4.
