Dalton excited for new role as assessor

Montgomery County’s new assessor is settling in.
Sharon Dalton, who previously served as assessor in Taylor County, started in her new position on June 13. Dalton said she sought the Montgomery County position because of a desire for change.
“The opportunity was there for a change, and I’m looking forward to being able to work with all of the people from the area, and the different work environment,” Dalton said.
Dalton currently resides in Sharpsburg, and plans to commute. She said she’s enjoying the move so far.
“I’m looking forward to getting my feet on the ground, and I’m excited at being able to have this new adventure. I love going out and doing the field work and working with the taxpayers,” Dalton commented.
Dalton said her biggest goal is to let people know there is a reason behind everything the assessor’s office does.
The state gives us the guidelines, and we don’t raise property values just because. Everyone should be treated fairly, and with my residence being in Taylor County, when I was assessor, I treated my property the same as everyone else’s,” Dalton explained. “My deputy even suggested I was valuing my property a little high. I didn’t want anybody to ever say that I was showing favoritism for anything. It really helps if you can let the taxpayers know that you’re working with them, not against them.”
As she progresses in the new post, Dalton said one of her first objectives is to be out doing field work.
“It’s been suggested that we should be out pricing the new homes instead of hiring the service to be done. So once I’ve got my feet fully on the ground here, we’re going to be doing that rather than hiring the job out to another company,” Dalton said.
Dalton also met with the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors at the regular meeting June 14, and said she was anxious to be working with the county.
“It’s going to be a new experience for me, and I want to put forth that I am very willing to work with everyone, and will do whatever I can to make the work flow run a lost more smoothly,” Dalton commented.
