Corning’s De Heaton named State Fair ‘Iowan of the Day’
The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation and Cookies Food Products are pleased to present De Heaton of Corning as an Iowan of the Day for the 2023 Iowa State Fair.
Heaton said being nominated for the Iowa State Fair honor was completely unexpected.
“I was very surprised, I didn’t even know friends had nominated me, yet I was thrilled to showcase Corning as well as Southwest Iowa,” Heaton said.
Heaton averages more than 30 hours a week serving her community through her work at the Corning Opera House. She has volunteered at the Opera House since 2012 as the Executive Director.
Heaton assists with a wide range of activities along with plays and concerts for the community. She oversees maintenance of the building, writes grants and makes sure that entertainment is family friendly.
Though Heaton does not receive a salary, her work ethic and attention to detail would reflect otherwise. She pours her heart into serving Corning.
Heaton is a strong advocate for music education and experience. She facilitates many youth activities such as the children’s musical, “Tea Parties,” the annual Polar Express Celebration as well as planning and setting up educational activities for students on “early out” days.
Thanks to Heaton, the small town of Corning attracts many with the variety of acts she brings in. It is clear that she wants to make her community a better place to live and she certainly doesn’t lack passion.
Heaton’s day of recognition was Aug. 14 at the 2023 Iowa State Fair with a presentation on the Anne & Bill Riley Stage. Along with accommodations at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, she received a gift bag, grandstand concert tickets, use of the Iowan of the Day golf cart, a cash prize, Iowa State Fair admission tickets, and VIP parking.
