Construction project begins on bridge over Red Oak Creek

If you travel on Iowa 48, 1.3 miles south of the intersection with U.S. 34 in Red Oak, be aware of an upcoming construction project that may slow down your trip.
The project, which was originally scheduled for the summer of 2027, began on Monday, May 11. The project is expected to be ongoing until approximately Nov. 25, weather permitting, crews will work on replacing the Iowa 48 bridge over Red Oak Creek. The work zone on Iowa 48 will be between 2nd Avenue and West Reed Street.
Traffic will be maintained with an opposing traffic pattern that includes a temporary rail barrier and a lane separator system. A 9-foot-4-inch lane-width restriction will also be in place during this project.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
Officials with Red Oak Community Schools are highlighting the significant restrictions including narrowed lanes, right-turn-only movements, and full closure of key intersections, most notably Washington Avenue access to Highway 48 (Broadway) during Phase 1. Officials believe these changes will substantially disrupt normal traffic patterns, particularly around the Preschool and Red Oak Child Development Center,
To adjust, the district will temporarily reroute all parent drop-off and bus traffic away from Washington Avenue. During phase one (approximately three months), all vehicles coming from the north and west will be directed to enter via Coolbaugh Street, turn left (south) on West 3rd Street, turn left (east) on Washington, and then proceed north on West 2nd Street for drop-off near the rear entrance of the building. Families approaching from the south will be encouraged to access the same route by turning west on 2nd Avenue (Barr Tire) and coming north on W. 2nd Street to avoid congestion. Buses will follow a simplified version of this reroute to avoid the bridge entirely. School officials ask that no traffic go south on West 2nd Street to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Child care families who typically park will still access the lot from the west, but should expect delays due to increased traffic volume, reduced access points, and limited on-site circulation. All families and staff should plan for additional travel time, particularly during peak drop-off and pick-up windows, as congestion is expected. Administrators added that they recognize the short notice and appreciate the community’s patience as these temporary adjustments are implemented.
