Nelson awarded Quilt of Valor

A rural Red Oak veteran is the latest recipient of a Quilt of Valor.

Dwight Nelson Sr, a Korean War veteran who served from July, 1953 to January, 1955, was presented his Quilt of Valor with his family in attendance.

The Quilt of Valor Foundation is a national organization founded in 2003 by “Blue Star” mom Catherine Roberts. Roberts’ son was deployed in Iraq, and she made the first quilt to serve as a comfort for her son upon his return from the war. After that first quilt was made, the organization was founded.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation’s mission is to cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with the comforting and healing quilts. Since being founded, the organization has awarded over 95,000 quilts to veterans of military actions, conflicts, and wars, including World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Beruit, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

The quilts are fashioned in a variety of ways, either by one or two quilters, or through the combined efforts of many women and men of all skill levels.

On behalf of the Quilts of Valor Foundation and a garetful nation, with their deepest appreciation, the organization thanks Nelson Sr. for his service to the country with the Quilt of Valor award.
