Mount Vernon defeats Red Oak in volleyball semifinals
The 2014 volleyball season came to an end at the US Cellular Center Thursday afternoon for the Red Oak Tigers as they lost 3-1 to the top-seeded Mount Vernon Mustangs in the 3A semifinals.
Red Oak stepped up right away, taking the first game 25-23. Game two was close, but went to Mount Vernon, who won 25-21. Game three was also close, but the Mustangs pulled away late to get the 25-20 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Mount Vernon took control in the fourth game as they got the 25-15 win, clinching a spot in the championship match against Solon.
Red Oak had to contend with Mount Vernon hitter Katelyn Volesky, who recorded 18 kills against the Tigers. Leading the way for Red Oak was Kate Walker, who had 21 kills and 16 digs.
