Methodist Student Nursing Assistant Program Offers Employment and Free CNA Training

 In conjunction with Methodist Hospital Foundation and Nebraska Methodist College, Methodist Hospital has created a Student Nursing Assistant Program to train the next generation of certified nursing assistants (CNAs). Interested parties can learn more about the program and apply at methodistcollege.edu/sna-program.

Built on the foundation of Nebraska Methodist College’s CNA 100 program, which offered free CNA training to over 150 students in late 2020 and early 2021, the Student Nursing Assistant Program was created to support people who want to begin careers in healthcare. Qualified individuals enrolled in the program will first begin employment at Methodist Hospital and then be enrolled in Nebraska Methodist College’s five-week, hybrid CNA program. Recruitment has begun.

“After the success we saw with CNA 100, we wanted to refine our efforts,” said Deb Carlson, PhD, president and CEO of Nebraska Methodist College. “Instead of focusing exclusively on training, we are looking at the whole journey. By starting students off as Methodist Hospital employees, providing free training and a bonus structure, we are supporting their success at every step.”

Once certified, employees will be promoted to nursing assistant and receive a pay increase and a $500 bonus, with additional bonuses if they remain actively employed by Methodist Hospital for two years.

“CNAs are in high demand,” said Paula Pittman, vice president of human resources for Methodist Health System. “This program is unique in that training usually comes first and is required for the job. We start with employment, providing exposure to Methodist Hospital’s culture and allowing those hired to become familiar with the hospital environment. They’ll be able to observe what they’re learning on the job and ask questions both in the classroom and in the field.”
