MCMH’s first baby of 2016 starts life with a Red Oak detour

Sadee Rojas was prepared to make the hour-plus drive from her Creston home to Council Bluffs to deliver her second child.

However, that second child didn’t want to wait that long, prompting Rojas to make an unexpected stop in Red Oak to deliver her second chld.

As a result, Lexton Cruz Rojas received the hospital’s first baby of 2016 designation and a bundle of prizes to go with it.

Lexton was born at 9:27 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces and measuring 20 1/2 inches, the son of Juan and Sadee Rojas.

Rojas was under the care of Dr. Ferrer, who while based out of Council Bluffs, conducts a weekly clinic in Creston. She was about a week overdue and had an appointment to see the doctor again, but two days before that appointment, she called her mom at 5:30 a.m. saying it was time to deliver.

“I drove to my mom’s house in Lenox to drop off Drakelee, my 4-year old,” said Sadee.  “She was supposed to drive me to Council Bluffs.”

Her mom, Klisa Lynam remembers that ride didn’t go quite as planned.

“As we got close to Red Oak, her contractions were coming every two-three minutes and getting stronger and lasting longer. Thank God Red Oak was there! We had never been to the Red Oak hospital, we didn’t even know if they had an OB unit. We called them, and they said they did, so we decided to stop.”

“I wasn’t really scared, just in a lot of pain,” Sadee remembered.

“We might have been able to make it to Mercy, but the baby’s heart rate was dropping, so it was a good thing we stopped.”

Dr. Johnson delivered the baby.

“He and the staff at the Red Oak hospital were excellent, we were very happy with them,” said Lynam.

“Everything turned out fine,” said Sadee. I really liked all the nurses and everything.”

There are some perks for having the first baby born in a New Year, as the Rojas family discovered.

“They got so many gifts!” said grandmother Lynam. My son had to go help haul the stuff home because there wasn’t enough room in Juan and Sadee’s car!”

“My favorite thing was all the diapers,” said Sadee.

How does “big” brother Drakelee feel about the new baby?

“I think he really likes him,” said Sadee.

At their follow up visit with Dr. Ferrer in Corning, both mother and baby were found to be doing just fine.
