Mary Coughlin, 82

Mary Ann Hartman Coughlin, 82, Elliott, died Saturday, March 22, 2014, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.

Mary, the daughter of Louis and Margrette (Martens) Hartman, was born Jan. 28, 1932, at home near Lyman. Mary graduated from Griswold High School with the class of 1949.  

She married Clair Charles Coughlin Oct. 29, 1951, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Massena. Five children were born to this union, Diane, Bruce, Nancy, Brian and Debra. They lived on several different farms before settling on the family farm east of Elliott.  Mary lived at home until the time of her death.

Mary loved her family and truly enjoyed having family celebrations with her home-cooked meals. Her favorite time of the year was the spring and the fall, where she would be seen helping with planting and harvest and delivering meals on wheels. She was a true volunteer with many years as a 4-H leader and many hours helping with the Elliott Business and Betterment Association. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Clair, June 22, 1992; her parents, Louis and Margrette Hartman; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Virgil and Arminta Coughlin; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and Swanie Franzen; her brother-in-law, Donald McCunn; her nephew, Scott Hartman; and a brother in infancy.

She is survived by her five children, Diane Sifford and husband Jim of Red Oak, Bruce Coughlin and wife Glenda of Elliott, Nancy Zimmer and husband Nick of Red Oak, Brian Coughlin and wife Jana of Elliott and Debra Church and husband Brian of Atlantic; six grandchildren, Jamie Sifford and wife Melanie of Red Oak, April Rhymaun and husband Rich of Denver, CJ Coughlin and his special friend Tiffany Ruhr of Elliott, Andy Coughlin of Elliott and his special friend Macy Kaiser of Red Oak, and Connor and Camryn Church of Atlantic; three great-grandchildren, Bradley and Brayden Sifford of Red Oak and Ellie Rhymaun of Denver; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A mass of Christian burial will be Friday, March 28, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold.  Interment will be in Weirich Cemetery, south of Lyman. A Rosary will be held at Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold Thursday at 6 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8 p.m.  

A memorial fund has been established. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
