Marjorie Monson, 89

Marjorie Ann (Morton) Monson, 89, of Red Oak and Essex, passed away Dec. 5, 2011, in Red Oak.

Marjorie was born to Herbert Lewis and Hazel Ella (Winn) Morton April 9, 1922, in Red Oak.

Marjorie’s early years were spent primarily in the community of Red Oak. When she was 4 years old, the family moved to Newton because her father took a job for Maytag. The family returned to Red Oak in 1931 after the plant closed.

Marjorie graduated from Red Oak High School with the Class of 1940.

She married Ted Monson Jan. 27, 1943. The couple made their first home in Omaha until Ted was drafted and Marjorie returned to Red Oak to reside.

She worked for Murphy Calendar Company off and on as a secretary for a total of 36 years until her retirement. She also worked for Kalo Brick and Tile and Farmers Insurance as a secretary while living in Fort Dodge.

In 1961 the couple moved to their residence east of Essex where she resided for the next 50 years.

Marjorie was a lifelong member of the Red Oak Baptist Church. Some of her hobbies included reading, gardening, camping, fishing and crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Rosa Swanson; husband, Ted Monson, in March of 1991; son, Daryl Monson, in September of 2009; and daughter, Susan Monson, in January of 2010.

Survivors include her children, Lori Monson, of Essex, and Richard Monson, of Lafayette, Colo.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Memorial services took place Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Faith Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex. Burial followed in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Nyman.

Memorials may be directed to the Marjorie Monson Memorial Fund. Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
