March Mayhem

March Mayhem is scheduled for March 31 and April 1 in Stanton at the high school gymnasium.
This year marks the 15th anniversary of the fund raiser for the school.
“We started this in 2002 for a way to raise money for a memorial for the Maley girls,” Jeff Grebin said. “Now, all proceeds go to a cause in the community. Every year is different.”
The cause has not been decided upon yet for this year’s proceeds, but the schedule has been set.
The busy schedule begins on Friday, March 31, at 5 p.m., with glow in the dark volleyball.
The following morning ,activities open at 7:30 with registration for the 5K fun run/walk and three-on-three basketball at 8 a.m. A basketball team consists of a five-person roster.
“There are six divisions for the three-on-three competition now,” Grebin said. “We have had up to 40 basketball teams in the past and needed to add a bracket for the men over 35 group.”
The additional bracket came about due to all of the college students who come back to play. Usual college teams include men from Central, Simpson, Wartburg, Iowa Western, Southwest Iowa Community College, and DMACC.
“The brackets now are junior high boys, junior high girls, high school boys, high school girls and adult women, men under 34, and men over 35,” Grebin said.
After the three-on-three competitions, the specialty shooting contests begin. These include three-point shots, half-court shots, and a dunking contest.
Following the basketball activities, the dodgeball tournament will begin.
“We have between 17-21 dodgeball teams,” Grebin said. “A team consists of 10 on the roster and six on the floor.”
The concourse will be full of concessions, including smoked brisket and Casey’s pizza.
“All four grades in the high school are involved in the March Mayhem activities,” Grebin said. “From ideas to work schedules to participation, the kids are all heavily included.”
This year, an additional tournament will be added to the schedule following the dodgeball tournament.
“We are doing a bean bag toss tournament on Saturday,” Grebin said. “The cost will be $5/person and you can register solo or as a doubles team.”
T-shirts will also be sold for the event.
“When this thing started, I had no idea it would get this big,” Grebin said. “It just keeps growing.”
