To the Editor:

Over the past several years, Montgomery County has been ranked among the highest in all 99 counties in Iowa for child abuse, which is not a category in which you want to be ranked high. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, during which time the Family Success Network of Montgomery County is putting together a coloring contest for all second and third grade students at Inman Primary in Red Oak, Stanton Elementary, and Villisca Elementary schools.

Pinwheels are the child abuse prevention symbol. It stands for the joyful, carefree childhood all children deserve. As you travel around Montgomery County, watch for the shiny blue pinwheels displayed throughout the county. The pinwheels will be put up and distributed the week of April 17.

The Montgomery County Child Abuse Prevention Council, Family Success Network, has begun to rebuild over the past year. The Family Success Network has been around for several decades but began to dissolve a few years ago. We believe it important to rebuild and become a stronger part of Montgomery County. Our new mission is to strengthen and support families of Montgomery County. We believe it is important to focus on becoming healthier, happier families together. If you have interest in supporting the council, we meet the first Friday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at the Red Oak Community School District administration office board room.
