JUNCTION DAYS 2015

Another successful Junction Days celebration has passed.

The city of Red Oak hosted the 37th Annual Junction Days last Friday-Sunday.

After an opening ceremony Friday night, local children decorated their bikes and scooters and participated in the “Munchkin March.” Inflatable bounce houses and games were set up around Fountain Square Park for children and families to enjoy.

The Red Coach Inn and Restaurant hosted an all-class reunion, complete with barbeque and live music.

Red Oak Chamber and Industry Association Executive Director Paul Griffen said he was told around 1,000 people attended the reunion. He said he did not have an exact number.

The inflatables for kids and the reunion were new events at this year’s Junction Days.

“Everything went very well,” Griffen said. “The new events were well received, like the inflatables and the all-class reunion.”

Saturday morning started with events such as a community breakfast, a fun run and the grand parade.

Throughout the day, patrons enjoyed well-liked events such as a soapbox derby, talent show, water fights and the Kiwanis duck race.

In the evening, a beverage garden opened to the public on the corner of Coolbaugh and 2nd streets. Three bands, Eric Nelson, Big Joe Kinser and Code Blue, performed throughout the night.

Griffen estimates close to 1,000 people attended the beverage garden Saturday night.

Sunday morning, the Red Oak Ambassadors hosted the annual Flight Breakfast. Along with a breakfast, participants could also purchase plane and helicopter rides, register for a free flight lesson and see displays.

To finish off the weekend of celebration, a mud volleyball tournament was held.

Griffen said he could not have asked for a better weekend with nice weather and the help of volunteers and the ROCIA staff.

“I appreciate all of the volunteers who made [the event] run smoothly,” Griffen said. He also thanked his staff and sponsors of the event for the hard work involved in producing Junction Days.

Red Oak Police Chief Drue Powers said only three arrests were made throughout the weekend and called it a “pretty quiet weekend” for the department.
