Juanita DeVoss, 94

Juanita N. DeVoss, 94, Red Oak, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at the Shenandoah Medical Center.

Juanita Maxine Nelson DeVoss, the daughter of Axel A. and Helga (Johnson) Nelson was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Essex. Juanita attended Centennial country school and graduated from Essex High School. She continued her education at business school in Des Moines.

Juanita married Darwin S. DeVoss Feb. 13, 1955, at the Essex Presbyterian Church. They resided and farmed west of Essex until moving to a farm south of Red Oak in l959. Juanita and Darwin moved to Red Oak in l984. She worked as a bookkeeper/accountant for Union Carbide Battery Company, the Weekly Times and Holiday Inn.

Juanita was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Monday Club and ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Lodge all in Red Oak and Rathkamp Matchcover Society. She was also a past member of the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Juanita loved traveling, the highlight being her trip to Ireland. She enjoyed playing the piano, bridge and skipbo.

Juanita was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darwin; three brothers, Linne Nelson, Dr. Clifford Nelson and Bruce Nelson; and four sisters, June Sheppard, Eleanore Bertram, Lorraine Nelson and Phyllis Alm.

Juanita is survived by sisters-in-law, Bea Nelson of Shenandoah and Kathleen (Harlan) Ebert of Red Oak; brother-in-law, Carl Alm of Elliott; nieces, Vici (Jack) Giltner, Jeanne (Don) Kocis, Becky (Ron) McConkey, Judi (Jack) Missett, Barb (Don) Wilder and Carla (John) Mueller; and nephews, Dennis (Joyce) Nelson and Tom (Rhonda) Nelson; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home. Burial in the Essex Cemetery at 1 p.m. with Rev. Dr. George Hooper officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the funeral service Wednesday morning at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home.
