James (Alfred) Smiley, 82

 

James (Alfred) Smiley, 82, passed away on June 13, 2010, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak.
James was born Dec. 15, 1927, to James and Elizabeth Smiley in Honey Creek. He attended school in Missouri Valley where he graduated in 1944. Alfred was united in marriage on June 5, 1947, to Alice Longmeyer. The couple had four children: son, Gary and daughters, Susan, Barbara and Jody. After making their home in Missouri Valley, Alfred drove a truck for his uncle, Guy Fox. He then became a Fireman for Union Pacific Rail Road. He started farming in 1953, farming in Missouri Valley, Pacific Junction, Emerson and Red Oak. After retiring from farming in 1989 he became a truck driver for Henningson Construction in Atlantic. When he retired in 1995 he became an avid gardener, raising watermelons and other vegetables that he always enjoyed sharing with family and friends. He also loved spending time with Jiggs, his dog, teaching him tricks and letting him ride along on the lawn mower. Through the years Alfred enjoyed pitching for a fast pitch softball team in Glenwood, playing pool, and entering pool tournaments, where he collected many trophies. He also liked playing cards and watching horse racing.
Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Elizabeth and brother Calvin. Survivors include his wife Alice, son, Gary and wife Peg Smiley of Imogene, daughters, Susan Barnes of Glenwood, Barbara Converse of Edmond, Okla., and Jody and husband Mike Stille of Blanchard; sisters, Lila White of Papillion, Neb., and Margie Salter of Missouri Valley; 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, other relatives, a host of friends and Jiggs.

A memorial service was held June 17 at the StrahanUnitedMethodistChurch in rural Hastings. Memorials are directed to the Red Oak Library.
