Isaacson, Mertz, Jansky picked for first-team all-district

The Red Oak Tigers football team had nine players, including three for first-team, picked for the all-district in Class 2A-District 8, released last week.

Brock Isaacson, Conner Jansky and Tanner Mertz were the three players picked for first team. Isaacson and Jansky were picked for offense, while Mertz was a defensive selection.

In his junior season, Isaacson led the district in rushing yards with 1,421 on 228 carries. He also had nine touchdowns this season.

Jansky was the top receiver for Red Oak this season, catching 14 balls for 249 yards with four touchdowns.

Mertz, meanwhile, was second in the district for total tackles with 73.5. His 49 solo tackles were second highest in the district.

Dean Smith and Hayden VanMeter, defensive players for Red Oak, were both picked for second team.

Smith was third in the district for tackles with 64 (his 38 solo tackles also the third highest).

VanMeter was in the top 10 for solo tackles in the district. He was tied with teammate Colin Bruce with 26.

The Tigers had four honorable mentions on the list, including Bruce, Brendon Birt, Tanner Gilliland and Eric Goodwin.

Birt and Goodwin were picked for offense and Bruce and Gilliland for defense.

Birt had seven catches for 200 yards and one touchdown this season.

Goodwin served as one of the key blockers on the offensive line. With Goodwin on the line, Red Oak rushed for 1,921 yards and scored 22 touchdowns.

Gilliland was third on the team with 47 total tackles, while Bruce was fourth with 42.5.

Red Oak finished the 2014 season with a 3-6 record, missing out on the playoffs.
