Investigation continues into Hertz’s death

 

MALVERN — In a press release issued Wednesday afternoon, Mills County Sheriff Eugene Goos acknowledged that his office is continuing an on-going investigation in Malvern that includes the death of Karl Hertz, 62.
Hertz, the owner and president of Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home, Inc., and former mayor of Malvern, died early in the morning April 16 at his residence as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“The Mills County Sheriff’s Office continues to move ahead with all open investigations,” Goos said in a prepared statement. “Neither the Mills County Sheriff’s Office nor the Mills County Attorney’s Office can comment on pending investigations.”
Goos also declined to comment on any specific rumors regarding the case. 
“These offices cannot confirm or deny specific facts or rumors until the completion of a thorough investigation. It is the duty of these offices to consider all information and evidence gathered by the investigators to determine the proper cause of action.”

Private funeral services were held for Hertz April 22 at St. John’sLutheranChurch in rural Hastings, with interment in the MalvernCemetery.
