Highway 34 reopens after gas leak

RED OAK — A cut in a residential line resulted in the closing of Highway 34 Saturday morning and the evacuation of several nearby businesses.
The gas leak occurred just north of Highway 34 behind rental property owned by Ron and Carol Keast. The Little Cabin by the Creek Bed and Breakfast, also owned by the Keasts, is located adjacent to the property.
Following the gas leak, several local businesses and homes were evacuated, including K-Mart to the east and DirecTV's call center to the south.
Highway 34 along with Old Highway 34 were both closed as well from Highway 48/Broadway to Evergreen.
While a code red was issued at 11:35 advising of the highway closings, they were both reopened about noon, just a few minutes after Mid American employees arrived at the scene.
Business employees were then allowed to return to work and residents returned home.
A subsequent Code Red alert was issued at 12:48 p.m. advising the highways had reopened.
