Treynor tops Tigers in district semifinals

Red Oak’s season came to an end in the Class 2A, Region 7 semifinals Friday.
No. 4 ranked Treynor (20-3) used a 28-12 second quarter run to pull away the Tigers in a 68-52 win.
The two teams were tied after a quarter at 16-16 before the Cardinals’ big run put them ahead 44-28 at the half.
“The Tigers got it back within eight, but we couldn’t score down the stretch to keep chipping away,” said Red Oak coach Jesse Taylor.
AJ Beeson hit five threes and scored 17 points to lead the Tigers. Dillan Rydberg added 12 points and Carson Roeder finished with nine points and eight steals. Reese Montgomery, who entered averaging a team-high 19.7 points per game, was limited to seven points. The junior forward did add 10 rebounds and five assists.
Red Oak closes its season with a record of 12-11.
“Our seniors - Ethan Fouts, Masen Fisher, and Mason Gurney’s high school basketball career ended tonight,” Taylor said. “Gurney’s year unfortunately came to an end earlier in the season with an injury, but I’m extremely proud of all three of these guys with the way they stepped up to lead this team.”

Red Oak 65,
Clarinda 56
Red Oak led for much of the game and held off a late rally from Clarinda in a 65-56 win in the Class 2A, District 14 first round last Tuesday in Red Oak.
The win gives the Tigers the rubber match victory over the Cardinals after splitting in the regular season.
“It was a nail-biting game all the way down to the finish,” said Red Oak coach Jesse Taylor. “Clarinda played really well and took the lead in the fourth quarter, but we battled through it and took the lead right back and never looked back.”
Tiger forward Reese  Montgomery finished the game with 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Carson Roeder added 13 points and AJ Beeson 12 points.
Masen Fisher chipped in eight points but all of them were big, Taylor said.
“He had absolutely huge buckets in the second half for us, especially his free throws late in the game,” Taylor said.
All six of Dillan Rydberg’s points came on a pair of big fourth quarter three-pointers for the Tigers.
For the game, Red Oak shot 46.8 percent – 22-of-47 – including 11-of-22 from behind the three-point line.
Sam Kline led Clarinda with 17 points.
