Timberwolves can’t get offense going in loss
Martensdale St. Mary’s earned a 46-35 victory over Southwest Valley in Pride of Iowa Conference girls basketball play.
Both teams fought hard all night and held their opponents under their scoring average, said Southwest Valley coach Mike Cormack.
“Obviously, we play to win,” Cormack said. “But, our team fought hard all night on defense and held a talented offensive team to 46 points. Our effort was there all night. We just couldn’t execute on offense most of the evening. I am proud of our team for continuing to give their all and we finally put together a nice 16-6 run to close the game against their starters. We just ran out of time once we started clicking on offense.
“We won the second half but dug too deep of a deficit to come back. But, very pleased we kept at it and closed the game strong against such a good team.”
Maddie Bevington led the Timberwolves with 17 points. She was 2-of-2 from the free throw line and only trails Nodaway Valley’s Izzy Eisbach in the league for free throw percentage made (80.6 percent).
Mackenzie Fast added seven points and a team high 11 rebounds. Hailey Randall had five points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Pearson made a three pointer from deep in the corner for her points. Lydia Forsythe contributed 2 points and Natalia Zimmerman rounded out the scoring with a free throw.
The Timberwolves (4-15 overall, 4-11 in the conference) will open postseason play Thursday night at conference rival Lenox (15-4). Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to play the winner of Diagonal vs Wayne in 1A action.
