Timberwolves’ season ends in regional opener

The Southwest Valley volleyball team’s season came to an end with a 25-14, 25-11, 25-18 loss to Council Bluffs St. Albert in the Class 2A, Region 4 quarterfinals last Wednesday.
Southwest Valley coach Lisa Sparks said her team never got in synch on offense against the Saintes (17-14) in the loss that snapped their eight game winning streak.
“We got stuck in a few serve receives and could not get our passes to our setter in order to run a solid offense,” Sparks said. “The girls did fight and we made changes; they were not enough to take a win though.”
St. Albert held a 32 to 16 edge in kills and limited the Timberwolves to a .119 hitting efficiency.
Ray Helvie led Southwest Valley with 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks.
Elin Hogan recorded 13 set assists and Deklyn Mullen had six digs and two aces.
Seniors Helvie, Mailee Templeton, Deklyn Mullen and Anistyn Poston all suited up for the Timberwolves for the last time in the match. All four will be missed, Sparks said.
“They have left their mark on the program,” she said. “They have put in the hours to better themselves and our team. Their knowledge, leadership and skill will be missed. We send a thank you to Ray Helvie, Deklyn Mullen, Mailee Templeton and Anistyn Poston for all they have done for Southwest Valley volleyball.”
The Timberwolves close their season with a record of 21-5.
