Three Tigers compete at Sioux City Relays

The Red Oak girls and boys track teams took three athletes to the Sioux City Relays, and all three came away with medals on Saturday.
“It was a cold and rainy day but we thought we would bring a few athletes to this meet to get closer to the Drake Relays,” said Red Oak coach Sueann French. “Cale Hall is in as of now in the 100-meter dash.”
Hall was sixth in the 100-meters with a time of 11.09.
Emmanuel Grass led the Tigers with a runner-up finish in the 1,600-meters. He finished in a time of 4:38.70.
Jocelyn O’Neal capped the Tigers’ day with a 10th place finish in the long jump.

Cardinal Co-Ed Relays
The Southwest Valley girls and boys track teams traveled to the Cardinal Co-ed Relays in Clarinda on a cold and rainy Thursday night.
With the spring weather playing havoc with track season, the meet was canceled after the 800-meters with five events to go. Council Bluffs won the boys team title with 121 points while the host Cardinal girls were first with 85.5 points.
The Timberwolves boys finished in fifth place with 40 points, while the girls were in 10th place with 10 points.
The field events were a strength for the Southwest Valley boys with Gavin Wetzel leading the way with a first-place finish in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches. Caleb Owen set a new school record in the shot put with a second-place throw of 47 feet, 5.5 inches. Walker Bissell took fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches while Brody Crozier was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 11.5 inches.
Crozier added a fourth-place finish in the 100-meters and the boys distance medley relay finished in third place in a time of 4:07.55 with Bissell, Wetzel, Wyatt Mendenhall, and Anis Ahkdar.
The boys sprint medley relay added a seventh-place finish.
For the girls team, the shuttle hurdle relay team led the way with a second-place finish in a time of 1:18.25 for Mailee Templeton, Joslynn Benge, Saige Jones and Alyssa Pearson.
Other girls scoring came from the distance medley relay with an eighth-place finish in a time of 5:44.66.
After having 2 consecutive meets cancelled due to the unpredictable spring weather, Southwest Valley coach Jason Hults said it was great to be back on the track.
“The kids were all ready to go and compete, and even though the weather eventually forced the meet to be cancelled, we still saw some great efforts and improvements from our kids in the early season,” Hults said.
Red Oak
The Red Oak boys were fifth in Clarinda with 45 points.
The Tigers’ 4x800-meter relay team continued its strong running with Hayden Hietbrink, Osiel Pedersen, Bryce Williams, and Reese Montgomery first in 8:38.
Cale Hall added a first place medal in the 100-meters and Grass was second in the 3,200-meters. Grass’ time of 9:37.90 broke the school record held since 1988 by Greg Brower.
“We are super proud Emmanuel who has worked so hard in the off season,” said Red Oak coach Sueann French. “He decided to run the two mile to see what he could do. He got out great running alongside the two Lewis Central guys. He had a plan and he stuck with it and beat the record. He only ran the race once last year.”
Red Oak’s Jocelyn O’Neal won three medals for the girls squad with an eighth place finish in the 400 and the 800 and a third place showing in the long jump.
