SWV’s Wetzel finishes season at state

Southwest Valley’s Gavin Wetzel went 2-2 at the Iowa State Wrestling Championships.
Wetzel, the Timberwolves’ lone state qualifier, on his Class 1A, 165-pounder opened with a win by major decision over Belle Plaine’s Derek Kressley. The senior would go down in his second round match on Thursday to South Winneshiek’s Kyle Kuboushek by technical fall to drop to the consolation bracket.
In the consolation rounds, Wetzel bounced back to earn a hard-fought 7-6 win over Trevor Kaut of North Linn before seeing his state run come to an end with a 9-4 loss to Emmetsburg’s Brayden Yates on Friday.
Wetzel finishes his season with a record of 48-11.
