Stanton 54,
Griswold 25
Stanton’s defense was its best offense in 54-25 win over Griswold in Corner Conference boys basketball last Tuesday.
On the night the Vikings struggled to get into a rhythm offensively – 31.9 percent shooting from the field, including 3-of-25 from three – their defense came up big. They forced 25 turnovers and held the Tigers to 19.6 percent shooting and a season-low scoring output.
“We obviously weren’t shooting great tonight,” said Stanton coach Donnie Weis. “We have a lot of great shooters, and the shots just weren’t falling for us. Defensively I think we did have quite a few steals, which is kind of what we want to do. If our offense isn’t working great, let’s play some defense and get some run outs and open it up a little bit, which I think we did well tonight.”
Weis was especially happy with his team’s energy, a night after they fell on the road at East Mills.
“That’s a big four quarter game, you know, so our guys were pretty tired,” Weis said. “We didn’t play too many guys last night. So, it’s kind of nice to get 10 guys on the floor. I thought we made it up for it defensively.”
Evan Gettler paced Stanton with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jacob Martin added 11 points, eight rebounds and five steals.
Peyton Cook scored eight points and Bode Wyman had six points and nine rebounds to lead Griswold.

The Knights (5-2 overall, 5-5 in the conference) were led by Bella Gute’s nine points. The senior added eight steals and four rebounds.

Stanton 60,
Griswold 24
A commitment to improving on the defensive end is paying off for the Stanton girls.
A night after holding East Mills to a season-low in scoring in a 43-11 win, the Viqueens scored the game’s first 12 points while shutting Griswold down offensively in a 60-24 victory last Tuesday night in Stanton
Stanton coach Dave Snyder said playing better defense and forcing more turnovers was an emphasis in the two-week holiday break and it showed against the Tigers.
“We put pressure on and then we wanted to guard against that next pass,” he said. “And that’s a very good part of our strength. The thing of it is, we’ve got two ideal wings out there in Hannah (Olsen) and Lauren Johnson and they’ve got good speed, long arms, good anticipation of what’s going to happen out there and it pays off night to night.”
The Viqueens’ 19-4 first quarter lead swelled to 34-15 at the half.
Olson led the way with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Johnson had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Addison Adams led Griswold with six points.
