Slow start, miscues doom Stanton in opener

Seymour scored the game’s first 22 points on its way to a 35-14 victory over Stanton in non-district football Friday in Seymour.
The Warriors lined up and ran the ball right at the Vikings from the opening snap. They scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and led 22-0 after the opening frame. They finished the game with 407 yards of total offense, 304 of them coming on the ground.
Stanton coach Jeff Grebin said that running game was tough to contain but his team didn’t do themselves a lot of favors, especially early.
“They took advantage of a lot of our miscues and penalties and execution errors,” Grebin said.
The Vikings turned the ball over six times, lost two onside kicks and committed 11 penalties in the loss.
“So basically, we gave them the ball eight times,” Grebin said. “But we did move the ball well. We got inside their 15 (yard line) five times and didn’t come away with any points. It wasn’t like we weren’t moving the ball. We were just our own Achille’s heel. We made too many errors, and it put us behind the sticks and in a position where we had to pass and they knew it, and they were able to defend the pass.”
Grebin chalks some of those execution errors up to first game jitters and inexperience.
“It’s an early game, but we made penalties with guys going in motion not hearing the snap and getting caught leaning forward and they’d get flagged. We had some down field blocking issues on passes that got penalties and that got us some plays called back.”
The Vikings tallied 207 total yards on the night. Quarterback Nolan Case finished 8-of-21 passing for 98 yards. He added 11 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Brett Hart rushed for 60 yards and Owen Marsh 53 to lead the Viking ground attack.
Jayden Snow hauled in two passes for 33 yards and wrapped up four solo tackles on defense. Dominic Kirk led the defense with seven stops, including six solo tackles.
Stanton heads to Griswold Friday for a non-district match up at 7 p.m.
