Red Oak boys, girls fourth at H10 south meet

The host Red Oak girls and boys track team both placed fourth at the Hawkeye 10 Conference South Division Track Meet in Red Oak Thursday.
Glenwood swept the competition with the Ram girls compiling 125 points and the boys 151 to capture the team crowns. The Red Oak girls finished with 57 points.
Jocelyn O’Neal led the Tigers with a pair of top finishes. O’Neal had a top leap of 17 feet, 6.5 inches to win gold in the long jump and then ran a 1:01.69 to win the 400-meters.
“I am so proud of how our girls competed,” said Red Oak girls coach Abigail Ellsworth. “They worked hard and made sure to give their full effort in each event. We had a great start to our outdoor season tonight.”
O’Neal added a second place showing in the 200-meters and also joined Iris Ogden, Karly Jenkins and Keely Jones for a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
The Tigers added a second place showing from its distance medley relay, and a pair of third place finishes in the shuttle hurdle and 4x200-meter relays.
The Red Oak boys compiled 49 points in its fourth-place finish.
On what Red Oak boys coach Sueann French called “a beautiful night for a track meet,” the Tigers’ 4x800-meter relay team of Reese Montgomery, Hayden Heitbrink, Osiel Pedersen and Emmanuel Grass won gold with a personal-record time of 8:48.73.
Bryce Williams added a gold medal in the 3200-meters and Grass (1,600-meters) and Cale Hall (100-meters) both notched second place medals.
The Tigers’ 4x100-meter had a great start but a dropped baton on the last handoff cost them a potential medal.
“We will keep working because I think that will be a solid relay for us,” said French. “We are seeing some really good things this early in the season. Can’t wait to see what next week will bring.”
