Dykes wins championship, Tigers 11th at Dan Christensen

The Red Oak boys finished in 11th place out of 15 teams with 79.5 points in the Dan Christensen Invitational at Central Decatur Friday.
Humboldt was the team champion with a score of 220 and Ottumwa was the runner up with a team score of 183.5.
Oliver Dykes won the heavyweight class and Dayton Gusman was the runner up at 144 pounds to lead the Tigers.
Dykes won all three of his matches by fall, including his championship match victory over Ottumwa’s Jedediah Suta in :33.
Gusman went 3-1, falling to Ottumwa’s Tayton Frueh 6-2 in the finals.
“Dayton fell in a close match in the finals, which came after he dominated the wrestlers who place third, fourth and fifth with one being a ranked returning state qualifier who was seeded first,” said Red Oak coach Tiegen Podliska.
Terence Raybourn, the Tigers’ 106-pounder, finished 3-2 on the day – with all his wins coming by pin – to place fifth.
Podliska said he thought his team had a good day overall at Central Decatur.
“Some of our less experienced guys may have finished two but they were far more competitive in some of the matches then they were yesterday,” Podliska said. “Terrence drew the one seed and got the first takedown before ultimately getting pinned. He did a good job rebounding, picking a couple pins up on the backside. He lost a back and forth consolation semifinal before dominating his final match against a kid he was 1-1 against last year.”
Jackson Rea (113 pounds) and Jackson Perdue (175) both placed seventh and Adrian Gaunt (157) was eighth.
“Jackson [Perdue] continues to trust the process and see positive results as a result, he was down 6-0 in his placing match and ended up getting a major decision,” Podliska said. “That is grit and that is what trusting the process and continuing to fight will get you.”
Red Oak girls eighth at Riverside invite
The Red Oak girls finished 8th at the Riverside Wrestling Invitational Friday.
Ridge View won the team title with a score of 127. The Tigers, who were eighth out of 18 teams competing, finished with 79.5 points.
The Tigers’ Janae Schwery was the champion at 235-pounds, pinning Emma Korwes in the finals.
Amber Rea (140 pounds) finished 3-1 with two falls and one technical fall to place third.
Bryleigh Mauer (105), Elaina Kuipers (120), and Jadeyn McAlpin (135) all placed fourth.
Tiger girls, boys wrestling hosts home triangular
The Red Oak girls were 1-1 and the boys 0-2 at a Hawkeye 10 Conference co-ed wrestling triangular Thursday.
The Tiger girls downed Atlantic 30-24 and fell to Creston 55-12. The boys lost both their duals to Creston 56-12 and Atlantic 60-14.
Podliska said his girls’ squad wrestled shorthanded but the win over Atlantic was good to see.
“We have to do a better job learning within the match, if we get taken down in a move, we need to have a little more awareness that it’s probably coming again,” he said. “Jadeyn and Amber did a good job rebounding in the second dual after losing to some tough opponents in the first.”
Jadeyn McAlpin (135 pounds) and Amber Rea (140) both picked up pins in the win over Atlantic. McAlpin notched a first period fall on Faithlynn Scholl and Rea pinned Alivia Knuth at 3:29.
On the boys side, Jackson Perdue led the way with a pair of victories. The Tigers’ 175-pounder pinned Creston’s Nate Bentley and then scored a major decision victory over Callan Kluever, 11-0.
Tiger heavyweight Oliver Dykes notched a fall of his own, downing Atlantic’s Cooper Woosley in 1:03.
“Our boys had a tough night against two of the consistent powers in our area,” said Red Oak coach Tiegen Podliska. “I thought they did some good things. We have a lot of wrestlers who are new to the sport in our lineup so it isn’t always about wins and losses, we have to look at winning certain positions and doing positive things.”
