Carroll wins battle of Tigers over Red Oak

The Red Oak girls soccer team dropped an 8-1 decision to Carroll in Hawkeye 10 Conference soccer Friday in Caroll.
Carroll’s Tigers won the coin toss and elected to take the wind in the first half. The first five minutes of the game was a back-and-forth contest between the teams until Red Oak had an unlucky hand-ball in the box leading to a penalty kick for Carroll, which they booted in for the 1-0 lead.
The goal gave Carroll momentum and led to two more goals in the next five minutes.
Red Oak fought hard and stayed strong for another 20 minutes until they conceded again in the 30th minute of the game. With time winding down in the first half, Red Oak had many opportunities and pressure on Carroll. This pressure pushed Carroll into their own box, and they too got called for a hand-ball leaving Red Oak in a position to score from a penalty kick.
Red Oak’s Mareli Ramos slotted it to the top left corner of the goal with 16 seconds left to play in the half to make the score 4-1.
Red Oak coach Dion Coffey said his team was pumped up and were so excited to have the momentum going into the second half.
Carroll quickly pushed the ball down the field and with some miscommunication and unfortunate touches from Red Oak, were able to score within the first minute of the half.
Red Oak regrouped and played excellently the remainder of the game, conceding only two more goals in the 67th minute and 79th minutes, Coffey said.
Coffey added standouts for the game included “everybody.”
“We played as a team and worked so well together,” the coach said. “Our passing is getting so much better and we are having fun all while playing the game we love.”
Mariella Richards-Hernandez had 19 saves, and Chloe Devito had four saves, including a penalty kick, in goal for Red Oak.
Red Oak (0-16) travel to Logan-Magnolia Thursday for its regular season finale. The Tigers will head to Harlan in its post-season regional game on May 26.

Underwood 10,
Red Oak 0
A quick start offensively was too much for Red Oak to overcome in a 10-0 loss to Underwood in non-conference girls soccer last Tuesday.
On one of the windiest days of the season, the Tigers won the coin toss and elected to take the wind in the first half, but the Eagles started the game hot with a goal in the first minute of the game and a follow up just a minute later.
With momentum still on the Eagles side, they were able to get two more goals in the seventh and eighth minutes to take an early 4-0 lead.
Red Oak cooled down and relaxed with some defensive stops along with many attacks throughout the game. With a goalie swap in the 20th minute, the girls stayed positive, said Red Oak coach Dion Coffey.
“Chloe Devito held down the fort in net with many incredible saves and was a true Tiger for us,” Coffey added.
The Eagles took an 8-0 lead into the half.
The Tigers switched out their goalie again for the second half with Kylea Aherns taking over.
“She was very excited and was peppy as ever to get to play in net,” Coffey said of the senior goalie.
Red Oak was able to hold on until the 48th minute, conceding their final two goals of the game.
“Just like the last three or four games, we are playing at our best and it’s showing with our defensive stoppages and offensive attacks,” Coffey said. “The girls are staying positive and are enjoying every single game.”
Mariella Richards-Hernandez had 10 saves in goal, Devito eight and Kylea Aherns one.
Remi Paulson led Underwood with five goals.

Creston 8,
Red Oak 0
Red Oak went on the road and dropped am 8-0 decision to Creston in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls soccer last Monday.
The Tigers battled for possession of the ball throughout the first five minutes of play before Creston got on the board for the early 1-0 lead.
Red Oak coach Dion Coffey said his team did a fantastic job moving the ball around and had many defensive stops, but the pressure from the Panthers was too much as they took a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute. Two more goals were conceded in the 13th and 22nd minutes.
Despite the goals, the Tigers were still fierce and kept battling through adversity, Coffey said.
With time winding down in the half, the Panthers were able to score three more goals in the 28th, 30th and 36th minutes leaving the score 7-0 at half.
With a pep talk and motivation amongst the team throughout halftime, the Tigers came out strong in the second half, holding the Panthers to a single goal in the final 40 minutes playing some of their best soccer of the season, Coffey said.
“It was the most pressure we had on a team this year and I’m so happy that the girls are peaking at the perfect time,” Coffey said. “The game ended in an 8-0 loss, but we did so well. The teamwork, communication and passion were on point.”
Mareli Ramos, Haylee Joint and Keidy Camilo Perez worked well as a trio on the front line, Coffey said, and Jasmine Grizzard, Chloe Devito, Bryleigh Mauer, Sonya Cech held down the midfield with Kylea Aherns, Mhylee Joint, Kenna Adams, Lily Marsden, Hannah Gross and ShaeAnn Carpenter provided a stiff backline of defense.
Mariella Richards-Hernandez added 17 saves in goal.
Ramos had a shot for the Tigers.
“We are right there competing with great teams and it’s only getting better,” Coffey said.

Red Oak soccer falls on road at Carroll
Carroll found the back of the net three times in the first three minutes of the game on its way to a 10-0 win over Red Oak in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys soccer Friday in Carroll.
Carroll (11-5-1) scored back-to-back goals in the 31st minute to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
“We just couldn’t manage any offensive against Carroll tonight,” said Red Oak coach Mark Kells. “Every attack we made they had a counterattack and just didn’t have any consistency tonight.”
Carroll added three more goals at the 26th,19th and 18th minutes to make it 8-0.
“We came out with energy but weather elements once again this spring played havoc on us,” Kells said.
Carroll added 2 more goals with 1 at the 9th minute and closed the game out at :06 seconds to make it 10-0.
“I thought we could have played a little better tonight, but it seemed nothing went right from the start,” Kells said.
Chris Luna and Wyatt Roberts combined for six saves in goal for Red Oak.
Red Oak (1-15) opened Class 1A postseason play Monday evening hosting Riverside (0-10) at Russ Benda Field. Complete results of that match can be found in next week’s edition of The Red Oak Express.

Underwood 10,
Red Oak 0
Facing 30 mile per hour winds and an energetic Underwood squad, the Red Oak boys soccer team came up short in a 10-0 road loss.
The Eagles came out of the gate and scored within the first minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers tried to gain possession but couldn’t find a balance in the 1st 10 minutes as the Eagles found the back of the net at fourth and seventh minutes to take a 3-0 lead.
“We finally settled down and started possessing the ball a little more in the first half but every time we had momentum Underwood was right there in the way,” said Red Oak coach Mark Kells.
The Eagles added two goals to take a 5-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, Kells switched to Kaden Conn in the net, and the junior did a good job holding the Eagles in check.
Underwood final got on the board again in the 69th minute to make it 6-0 on their way to the 10-0 win.
“We had some very positive play tonight but just couldn’t manage to connect on some timely passing that may have had a chance to get something on the scoreboard today,” Kells said.
Connor Brummett had three goals and Chase Ogle two to lead Underwood.

Creston 10,
Red Oak 0
Joaquin Flores put in five goals for Creston in a 10-0 win over Red Oak in Hawkeye 10 Conference soccer last Monday in Creston.
Red Oak coach Mark Kells said his team didn’t get the start they wanted and the Panthers had the Tigers on their heels with a goal just four minutes into the match.
Three minutes later, Creston stole possession and drove it right back through the middle of the field to take a 2-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff the Tigers turned the ball over and the Tigers quickly made it 3 - 0.
For the next 11 minutes the Tigers possessed the ball and battled with the Panthers but three goals in the final 12 minutes of the half made the score 7-0 at the half.
After half Kells thought his team finally settled down but Creston scored at the 35th minute in the second half to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The game would end by mercy rule with 11 minutes remaining.
“We played tough tonight, but we have been shorthanded for a few the last games and just have struggled to overcome the injuries this late in the year,” Kells said.
Chris Luna had 15 saves in goal for Red Oak.
