CAM ends Stanton’s season in regional opener

A slow start offensively doomed Stanton in the girls Class 1A, Region 7 basketball opening round Thursday in Anita.
Cumberland-Anita-Massena scored 19 of the first 22 points and then extended that margin to 27-5 at the half in the win over the Viqueens.
Piper French led Stanton with nine points. Cooper Stephens and Corinne Hopf each chipped in four points.
Ada Hansen poured in 27 points to lead CAM.
Stanton closes its season with a record of 4-18 overall, including a 3-10 mark in the Corner Conference.

Fremont-Mills jumped out to a 14-5 lead after a quarter and saw that lead swell to 17 points at the half in a 62-32 win over Stanton in Corner Conference girls basketball last Monday.
The Knights dominated the glass with a 38 to 24 rebounding edge – including 21 offensive rebounds – and limited the Viqueens to 27.5 percent shooting while forcing 28 turnovers.
Fremont-Mills coach Brett Weldon said he was proud of the way his team came out focused and ready to go from the opening tip.
“After beating them pretty easily the first game, I was a little worried that we’d take this one for granted,” Weldon said. “We did anything but. We came out strong on both ends and never looked back. Really proud of getting the regular season championship to go along with the tournament championship. Just a really good group of girls that work hard, are coachable and enjoy being around each other.”
Lana Alley led the way offensively for the Knights with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Brooklyn Weldon added 15 points and Carlie Nuckolls 12.
Piper French scored 16 points and Leilanie Foster-Saye added 10 for Stanton.

Knights down Vikings, 59-23
Fremont-Mills closed out its regular season with a 59-23 win over Stanton in Corner Conference boys basketball last Monday.
The Knights (10-11 overall, 9-4 in the Corner Conference) got after the Vikings (11-11 overall, 7-5 in the conference) defensively, holding them to 17.5 percent shooting – 7-of-40 – and their second lowest offensive output of the season. Fremont-Mills also held a 35 to 24 rebounding edge.
Sawyer Forney led three Knights in double figures with 18 points. Anders Langille added 14 points and nine rebounds and Rowen Howe chipped in 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Brodee Sowers and Wyatt Roberts scored six points each for Stanton.
