Griswold wins two in Bedford

After suffering a lopsided loss in the first game of the Bedford Classic, Griswold’s softball team rallied for a pair of wins in the Bedford Classic Saturday.

In that first game, Central Decator blanked Griswold 9-0, limiting the Tigers to just two hits, singles from Britney Hansen and Anna Mardessen.

“I’m pretty sure the Central Decator pitcher is the fastest pitcher we have seen this year,” Coach Peggy Hanson said. “So, after not playing for four days, our timing was bit off, and this was a tough way to try and get back in the grove.”

Ali Sindt gave up nine runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out four for the Tigers. She kept Griswold in the game until Central Decator broke it open with six runs in the sixth.

Behind the varsity debut of Rachel Northrup on the mound, Griswold rallied to win the second game 12-6 over Bedford.

Northrup overcame nine walks by giving up just three hits, surrendering all six runs. She fanned four in the win.

“She (Northrup) did a nice job getting the ball over the plate and letting the defense help her out,” Hanson said. “We still made some errors that we shouldn’t have, but we had some great plays that got us out of tough situations.”

One of those great plays was a 1-2-3 double play started by Northrup with the bases loaded.

After struggling offensively in their previous three games, Griswold started fast, scoring two in the first inning.

Griswold trailed though 3-2 going into the fourth before scoring five runs, including three on a bases-loaded throwing error.

Five runs in the fifth sealed the win for Griswold.

Hansen led the offense with a double and first-inning home run, driving home four. Katie Carlton and Ashley Bates each added a pair of hits, and Northrup doubled and singled to help her own cause. Mortensen also recorded a hit and scored three runs.

Griswold ended the tournament with a win after beating Sidney 12-4.

With four runs in the first and five in the third, Griswold led 9-3 and never looked back.

Sindt picked up the win on the mound, giving up runs on two hits and five walks, fanning two.

Carlton laced a pair of a doubles and a single, scoring twice to pace the offense. Madessan added three singles, two RBIs, and a run scored.
