Griswold wins 69-66 shootout; Stanton, Villisca cruise

Griswold 69, West Monona 66

As the clock ticked down to zero, the West Monona Spartans were left standing18-yard their 10th touchdown of the game, but ended up losing 69-66 to Griswold (5-0, 3-0 in district), Friday night.

In the Griswold win, the two teams combined for 1,304 offensive yards, 135 points (third highest in 11-man state history), and one punt.

“We just couldn’t stop each other the entire game,” Griswold head coach Andy Everett. “Time runs out and we somehow end up on the plus-side. When you go to shake the other coach’s hand you don’t understand why you’re not in the other coach’s position.”

Four Tigers’ running backs ran for more than 100 yards, led by Zach Schoning who had 191 yards on 18 carries.

Quarterback Dillon Bates (123 yards on seven carries), fullback Christian Van Scyoc (125 yards on 17 carries), and running back Landon Cousins (113 yards on 12 carries) joined Schoning, all four scoring two touchdowns each.

Bates also threw his first three career touchdowns to Cousins, Josh Ridlen, and Jacob Wetterlind. Bates was eight of 11 for 130 yards.

“I played in a game that ended up 49-59, but I’ve never seen a game like this,” Everett said.

The undefeated Tigers travel to Underwood to face the 2-3 Eagles.

The Eagles won their last game against Riverside (Oakland), 28-12.

Senior quarterback Tyler Hamilton and junior running back Dillon Robinson lead Underwood in the running game with 550 yards combined.

Griswold hopes to capitalize on turnovers as Hamilton has thrown for four interceptions compared to one touchdown this season.

Stanton 50, Farragut 14 – The Vikings (6-0, 3-0 in district) continue their winning ways as they dominated their third district game at Farragut.

Stanton distributed the ball well in the first quarter with rushing touchdowns by Greg Focht (24 yards) and Alex Whigham (65 yards) and passes from Tanner Stubbendeck to Shayne Larson (30 yards) and Zach McCarthy (35 yards) to lead 32-0 after the first quarter.

Whigham ran for another three touchdowns (19, 75, and 5 yards) in the second quarter to go into the half with a comfortable 54-6 lead.

Whigham led all rushers with 283 yards on 11 carries.

With a running clock in the second half, Stubbendeck added the last of the Viking touchdowns on an 8-yard run.

Stubbendeck completed six of eight passes for 81 yards and added 47 yards on six carries to the Vikings offense.

Stanton’s defense held the Admirals to 188 total yards of offense, led by Stubbendeck’s seven tackles.

The Vikings still stand alone atop the district, one game ahead of East Mills.

The Vikings have won their three conference games by an average of 42 points.

The Vikings hit the road for their second straight week as they face the Villisca Blue Jays.

Villisca is 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in district play following their 56-16 drumming of South Page, Friday.

The Blue Jays have added Nathan Cordon to the backfield with Nick Berggren to add some size to their powerful running game.

The Vikings will also have to contain the passing game of junior quarterback Timmy Myers who threw for 544 yards and six touchdowns in his first four games as a starter (second most in the district).

Whigham and the Stanton secondary will be trying to take advantage of the inexperienced quarterback as Myers leads the district with eight interceptions.

Villisca 56, South Page 16 – On a cold and wet night in College Springs the Blue Jays got their running game going while defeating the South Page Rebels.

In a game that the Blue Jays led 50-0 at the half, Co-Head Coach T.J. Quick was happy to get all of his players in to get some varsity experience.

Senior running back Cody Hardy had a breakthrough game, rushing for two touchdowns.

“(Hardy) finally ran like he did in week one,” Quick said. “It was nice to see him getting back on track.”

Quarterback Timmy Myers added to the scoring throwing three touchdowns and running in a two-point conversion.

The defense also put points on the board when Nick Berggren tackled the Rebels punter in the end-zone for a safety in the first quarter.

Zach Adcock added a defensive touchdown when he recovered a bad snap.

The Blue Jays continued working with a rotating system of running backs, having 10 different players carry the ball in the teams 162 rushing yard effort.

Nathan Cordon scored his first career rushing touchdown on a one-yard plunge the took Villisca into the locker room with a 50-0 at the half.

Jake Eblen scored the Blue Jays final touchdown on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter, closing out the win, 56-16.

The rivalry continues as Stanton comes to Villisca on Friday.

“Our kids get excited to play Stanton and they do too,” Quick said. “We went to their place last year and got a little caught up in the ‘awe factor’. This year we’ll have to focus and take care of business here.”

Villisca is now 3-2 overall and 2-1 in district play with a firm hold on third place.
