Griswold showing improvement

GRISWOLD – After starting the season 3-10, with wins over Essex/South Page, Audubon, and Sidney, the Tigers’ softball team won two of their four games last week.
The Tigers started their week by surprising Riverside (Oakland), 6-3, Wednesday.
Juniors Jenny Mortensen, Rachel Northrup, and Britney Hansen led the Tigers, combining for seven of Griswold’s 11 hits, scoring three runs, and driving in two runs.
Katie Carlton also added an RBI, hitting one of three.
Cassie Forsyth picked up the win, pitching a complete game, holding Bulldog hitters to six hits, giving up three earned runs and striking out six.
The Tigers’ defense held their ground behind Forsyth, only giving up two errors in the game.
Following their win over the Bulldogs, the Tigers kept their momentum with a win against Orient-Macksburg.
The Tigers tallied 11 hits, with two-hit games by Mortensen, Hansen, Keyla Reynolds, and Melissa Anstey.
Mortensen hit two of two with a double, scored three runs, and drove in one RBI, while walking and earning a sacrifice in her other two plate appearances.
Hansen led the Tigers with three RBI from her two hits.
Forsyth earned the win on the rubber. She gave up nine hits and three earned runs, but again Griswold’s defense helped, with only one error.
In their final two games of the week, the Tigers lost to two 2A schools at the Creston Tournament.
Clarinda defeated the Tigers, 8-4, in Saturday’s first game, followed by a 6-0 shutout to Creston.
Hansen and Carlton combined for four of the six Tiger hits against Clarinda. Hansen was tagged with the loss, pitching for Griswold.
In their final game, the Tigers were held to three hits against Creston, with Reynolds, Hansen, and Forsyth each hitting a single.
Forsyth gave up four earned runs on eight hits and struck out four Panther batters.
The Tigers are now 2-3 in Western Iowa Conference play, and 5-12 overall.
