Griswold has strong showing at home meet
GRISWOLD — Much of both Griswold varsity track and field team didn’t attend the Drake Relays as they were able to have a strong showing during the Tiger Coed meet.
The Griswold girls team took first overwhelmingly with a team score of 201 points, beating Shenandoah by 70 points. The Griswold boys team meanwhile finished second behind St. Albert with a team score of 122 points.
Stanton and Villisca also competed in the girls meet and finished fifth and sixth. Stanton had a team score of 61 points, while Villisca scored 38.
Larissa Backhaus had three wins individually for Griswold, as she won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.
Her closest win came in the 200 when she held off Shenadoah’s Brooke Silence by .18 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Backhaus ran a time of 13.75 seconds, about a half second faster than Stanton’s Avery Taylor.
Jordyn Sindt had a big afternoon when she won the 800-meter run and finished second in the 1,500, 3,000 and 400-hurdles.
Griswold had wins in the 4x400, the shuttle hurdles, as well as the sprint and distance medley.
Griswold’s shuttle hurdle team of Justine and Jeana Freund, Trisha Huerta and Kinzey Nicklaus ran a time of 1:11.92, defeating Stanton’s team of Logan Wagg, Macy Elwood, Lauren Stephens and Carmen Subbert by nearly two seconds.
Subbert did pick up the highlight win for the Viqueens in the 100-meter hurdles when she ran a time of 17.51 seconds, beating Nicklaus of Griswold by less than half a second.
Villisca had its highlight win courtesy of Morganne Haer as she won the long jump title with a jump of 16’1”, a half a foot ahead of Shenandoah’s Sydney Nielsen. Villisca’s best finish was in the sprint medley when Haer, Kelsey Means, Bree Ann Fisher and Jenny King ran a time of 2:04.21 to finish second.
On the boys side, Stanton took home fifth with a team score of 38 points.
For Griswold, Collin Fast provided a couple of highlights in the field events as he won the discus event and took second in the shot put.
Aaron Metheny won the long jump, while Mason Boucher took second in the high jump.
Griswold’s best finish in the track portion of the meet was in the 100-meter dash when Kenneth Clary took second with a time of 12.01. Barron Norman won the race by .01 second.
Allen Hamilton of Stanton was .06 behind Clary in third.
In the relay races, Griswold had four second place finishes (4x100, 4x400, 4x800 and shuttle hurdles). Stanton had two third place finishes (shuttle hurdles and 4x200).
