Governor honors Maher, tours plant

Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds made a swing through Red Oak Tuesday.

Branstad and Reynolds took a tour of the Johnson Controls plant and met with company representatives. However, one of the most important reasons for the visit was to honor longtime Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director George Maher, who retired from the position the day of Branstad’s visit.

Branstad offered warm congratulations to Maher, saying Maher and he shared a lot of fond memories over the years.

“We’re really proud to be here. I stayed with George when I ran for governor the very first time in 1982,” Brandstad said.

Branstad then give Maher a special recognition for his service to the state.

“In recognition, the office of Governor of the State of Iowa recognizes George Maher. The Governor and Lt. Governor salute you for over 50 years of developing and promoting Iowa as a premiere location to conduct business. We also salute you for your exemplary efforts to create careers for people in southwest Iowa have been exceptional. This honor shall not be unnoticed,” commented Branstad.

Maher was both surprised and honored to receive the award from Branstad.

“I’ve been working to make it the best place in the world. We’re also really glad to have Johnson Controls back in our area. I worked hard to get them here,” Maher said.

After the Red Oak visit, Branstad made a stop in Glenwood, and also toured George C. Grape Hospital in Hamburg. Branstad’s last stop was on Wednesday, June 2, at the Clarinda Correctional Facility.
