Friday Football: Stanton, Southwest Valley meet

While much of the state starts the football season Friday, 8-man district 8 already has a week of foo.tball.

Stanton Vikings (1-0 overall, 0-0 district) at Southwest Valley Timberwolves (1-0 overall, 0-0 district)- 7 p.m.

Both teams started the season with wins. By the end of Friday night, only one will get off to a 1-0 start in the district.

It will be the home opener for Southwest Valley, the pairing of Villisca and Corning. The game will be played at the Corning High School football field.

The Timberwolves won their first game last Friday when they defeated Tri-County 62-28.

The running game was key for Southwest Valley as they rushed for 515 yards. Zach Barton was responsible for 160 yards and had three touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Stanton defeated Nishnabotna (non-district game) 48-28.

Kyle Peterson threw two touchdown passes, while Trevor Wood ran for another in the win against the Blue Devils.

Stanton lost both games to Villisca and Corning last season.

Essex/South Page (0-1 overall, 0-0 district) at Lenox (1-0 overall, 0-0 district)- 7 p.m.

ESP looks to avoid the 0-2 start (0-1 in district). Essex/South Page opened last week with a 48-14 loss in Bussey to Twin Cedars.

They face a tough task in Lenox though, who is coming off of a 50-2 win against East Union.

Dustyn Rauch had a big game for Lenox last week as he rushed for 136 yards on 13 carries with three touchdowns.

Lenox is a combined 5-2 against both Essex and South Page.

Sidney at Nishnabotna

Nishnabotna looks to avoid the 0-2 regular season start. They play a Sidney team that is fresh off a win against Ar-We-Va.

The Cowboys had a big game out of Chris Osborne last week, who had 125 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Ar-We-Va.

The player to watch for Nishnabotna will be Andrew Welch. Last week against Stanton, Welch had 105 yards on 22 carries with one touchdown.

River Valley at CAM

This will be the only non-district game for district 8. CAM would like to put aside their week zero loss to Adair-Casey. They will try to avoid the 0-2 start going into district play, but first they have to defeat River Valley.

CAM lost last week to Adair-Casey 55-40. Despite the loss, Trace Ticknor and Dylan Amdor still had big games. Ticknor had five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) and had 234 yards in the air. Amdor had a touchdown and 79 yards rushing.

River Valley's player to watch will be Brennan Riedemann. Last season, Riedemann led the team in passing and rushing, throwing 20 touchdown passes and running in 34 more.
