Friday Football: Red Oak/Glenwood set to play at a new site

The 2A football season also kicks off Friday night around the state. However, for Red Oak, they will be playing the game at a neutral site.

The game between Red Oak and Glenwood has been moved to Plattsmouth High School in Plattsmouth, Neb. Rain to both the Glenwood and Red Oak football fields led to the game being moved to Plattsmouth, which is located just off of US-34. The game is still scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.

The Tigers enter Friday night with an 8-21 lifetime record (since 1951) versus the Rams. Red Oak has lost 15 straight times to Glenwood. Those losses include four straight shutouts from 1992-95. Their last win against the Rams came Sept. 11, 1987 by a 22-16 score.

Red Oak scored a big 13-10 win versus Shenandoah in the final week to clinch a playoff spot for the second straight year. They lost in the first round to Gilbert.

Glenwood rallied to make a late push for a playoff spot in 3A District 1 last season when they defeated both Lewis Central and Atlantic. However, losses to ADM and Creston left the Rams on the outside.

This will be the third straight season for Red Oak playing in Class 2A District 8. All games in the class are non-district.

Elsewhere, the Shenandoah Mustangs hit the road and go to Oakland as they face Riverside.

After losing in 2012 to Riverside, Shenandoah got back on track last season with a 24-7 win in week two. Wins against Greene County and Clarinda Academy appeared to give Shenandoah a shot at making the postseason. However, losses to Clarinda and Red Oak in the final two weeks of the season destroyed those chances.

Riverside meanwhile made the postseason last year, destroying Griswold and Logan-Magnolia's chances in the process. They were eliminated in the first round by Audubon, a team they upset 15-14 in round one.

Shenandoah leads the series 4-2. Riverside's only other win came in 2004.

In Carroll, the defending 2A state champion Kuemper Catholic Knights take the stage as they face off against Carroll. Last season, Kuemper Catholic went through the season undefeated and held off Waukon in the championship game to win 31-28.

Carroll came very close to knocking off the Knights in week one, but lost 7-6. They went on to win all, but one game (week seven loss to 3A Bishop Heelan) during the regular season. They lost in the second round to Harlan.

The other returning team to 2A District 8 this season will be Clarinda, who opens the season at home versus Atlantic.

The Cardinals got the third seed in the district last season, thanks to a loss to Greene County. They were eliminated by West Marshall 36-19 in the first round. Atlantic's lone win last season came in week one versus Clarinda.

The Cardinals haven't had much success against Atlantic as of late. They've lost three straight and five of the last seven meetings. Their last win came in 2008.

There are three new teams in the district this season: West Central Valley, East Sac County and Southeast Valley. All three teams will be in action.

West Central Valley will be home as they host Des Moines Christian. East Sac County is on the road as they face IKM-Manning. Finally, Southeast Valley will take on Manson Northwest Webster.
