Friday Football: Red Oak takes on Clarinda Academy
The Red Oak football team has a great opportunity to get back on track Friday night when they travel down to Clarinda to take on Clarinda Academy.
The Tigers look to put behind their second half loss against Greene County from last week.
In the 25-7 loss to Greene County, Red Oak was penalized 10 times, most this season.
With homecoming next week, the Tigers could use a big win against Clarinda Academy. Red Oak played Clarinda Academy at homecoming last season, defeating them 64-0.
With Clarinda Academy’s offense scoring just six points in the last three games, including two shutouts during that stretch, the opportunity is there for Red Oak to get that second district win.
Clarinda Academy scored their first points since week zero in last week’s 41-6 loss to Clarinda. The 41 points given up on defense was the fewest points Academy has allowed since week zero against Clarke.
Kadarius Coleman will be a player Red Oak needs to keep an eye on. Coleman leads Clarinda Academy in rushing yards (252) and touchdowns (two).
The three-pronged rushing attack of Brock Isaacson, Evan Mellott and Hayden VanMeter will be key for the Tigers. The trio has combined to score seven touchdowns this season.
Shenandoah at Treynor
This is the only non-district game for week five in district 8. The Mustangs are 2-2, fresh off a loss at home to OA-BCIG.
They take on a Treynor team that has won three in a row, including last week against Tri-Center 14-6. All three of Treynor’s wins this season has been by single-digit points.
Dane Livengood has been key for the Treynor offense. His 630 yards rushing is sixth most in Class 1A.
Scott Hastings will be a player to watch for Shenandoah. Hastings is third in the district in tackles with 48 and also has five tackles for a loss this season.
Clarinda at OA-BCIG
The Cardinals scored their first win of the season last week versus Clarinda Academy. It was their best effort on offense this season after scoring 16 points in the first three games.
But now they face a road test against OA-BCIG, who has won three of four, including last week at Shenandoah.
Last year’s meeting didn’t go well for Clarinda as they lost 53-20.
Dusty Swindler has been key for Clarinda on defense this season. Swindler leads the district in total tackles (58) and solo tackles (38). Swindler also recovered a fumble for a touchdown in last week’s win against Clarinda Academy.
Kuemper Catholic at Greene County
Kuemper Catholic continues to dominate this season. Their defense has given up 12 points. Their 49-6 win over South Central Calhoun last week snapped a two-game shutout streak.
Greene County will try for their second win in a row, but it won’t be easy, especially with Cole Neary leading the Knights offensive attack. Neary has 862 yards passing and 11 touchdowns this season, which leads the district.
Only Sam Sindelar of South Hardin and Alec Henrickson of Spirit Lake have more passing yards in Class 2A than Neary.
Kuemper Catholic won last year’s meeting 51-0.
