Friday Football: Red Oak heads to Glenwood

A new season of football is here for Class 2A District 8. All teams will be playing non-district games for Friday night.

Red Oak at Glenwood @ Glenwood High School- 7:30 p.m.

It’s finally here for Red Oak. A new season and a new head coach. All the hard work put in during the summer leads to the start of the new season.

They will face a tough task in their first game with Barry Bower as head coach as the Tigers take on Glenwood.

Red Oak lost the opener to the Rams last season 49-6.

The Tigers will try to make a return trip to the playoffs. Last season, they finished fourth in the district and lost to West Marshall in the first round.

Quarterback Ryan Leininger leads the returning Red Oak players for this season. Others back this year include Eddie Perez, Brendon Birt, Evan Mellott, Dakota Petty and Nathan Guffy.

For Glenwood, the win was one of their three in total for 2012. They missed out on the playoffs, going 3-6.

The Rams have quarterback Corey Bertini back this season. Last season, Bertini passed for 888 yards and five touchdowns, but was intercepted 10 times.

The last time Red Oak won against Glenwood was 1987.

East Mills at Shenandoah

Shenandoah won the first meeting between the two schools last season and they’ll try to get the next win.

The Mustangs bring back players like Sam Kroepl, Jackson Baker and Jose Rendon. Check out the Class A preview to see more on this match-up.

Atlantic at Clarinda

Both teams met in the opener last season and it didn’t end well for the Cardinals as they lost 48-7.

The last time Clarinda scored a win against Atlantic was 2008 when they won 19-7. That was a road game for the Cardinals. The last home win for Clarinda was 2006.

The Cardinals lost several key players, including starting quarterback Dakota Woods. They do bring back leading tackler from last season Jett Kettwick. Clarinda also has Blake Luna, Luke Strong and Dusty Swindler.

For Atlantic, leading rusher Jacob Dvorak will be back. He finished his junior season with 446 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Kuemper Catholic at Carroll

Kuemper Catholic had a solid 2012 season, going undefeated in the regular season and advancing as far as the state semifinals, losing to Spirit Lake 17-10.

With both Cole Neary and Chase Rupiper back, Kuemper Catholic is a likely favorite in the district this season.

Kuemper scored the 27-21 win against Carroll last season, their first since 2010. The Knights are 4-9 lifetime against Carroll.

IKM-Manning at OA-BCIG

IKM-Manning did in fact score a win over OA-BCIG last season. For OA-BCIG, they enter the season without last year’s star running back Trever Ryen, who led the district in rushing yards (1,280) and touchdowns (19).

OA-BCIG finished second in the district last season.

Greene County at Perry

Greene County lost the meeting last season to Perry and lost three of their first four games. They were able to win games down the stretch and finish third in the district.
