Friday Football: Class A Week 2

Griswold @ Nodaway Valley

Both football teams enter Friday night’s game with a 0-1 record. Griswold lost to St. Albert, 41-7, while Nodaway Valley lost to Mount Ayr, 48-24.

Defending against the running game was an issue for Nodaway Valley. Jacob Sobotka had 17 carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns in Mount Ayr’s win against Nodaway Valley. This year’s Nodaway Valley team is young as they have eight juniors and six seniors.

Griswold and Nodaway Valley first met in 1993. Since then, Griswold has the lead in the series, 10-5. The Tigers have won five straight against Nodaway Valley.

These two teams last met in 2009 with Griswold winning 33-29. Christian Van Scyoc ran for 292 yards and two touchdowns to lead Griswold.

Both teams would no doubt like to get their first win of the season before starting district play next week.

East Mills @ Clarinda Academy

East Mills struggled in their 11-man debut against the Shenandoah Mustangs, last week. They’ll take on another Class 2A District 8 team this week in Clarinda Academy, a familiar Corner Conference opponent.

The Wolverines loss was 10-7 to Shenandoah. For Clarinda Academy, they lost their first game in 2A to Clarke, 20-6 on Aug. 17. With their loss to Clarke, Clarinda Academy has a 19 game losing streak. Their last win was Aug. 27, 2010 against Martensdale St. Marys. Clarinda Academy has won two games since 2009.

Kyle Steiner and Nick Pittmon will be the players to watch for East Mills. Steiner rushed for 53 yards, while Pittmon had 44 on the ground in the Shenandoah loss.

East Mills will try to avoid starting the season 0-2 as district play starts for them next week.

Clarinda Academy has played Malvern twice, losing both games. The last encounter took place in 1995 when Malvern won 50-20.

IKM-Manning @ Logan-Magnolia

Logan-Magnolia got off to a strong start with their week one 55-7 thrashing of Missouri Valley. IKM-Manning also had a solid 2012 debut as they were able to defeat OA-BCIG, 24-19.

Paul Hutson had 94 yards and two rushing touchdowns in the Logan-Magnolia win over Missouri Valley. They were also able to get production on the ground out of Caden McDonald (88 yards, one touchdown), Drake Cohrts (51 yards, two touchdowns and Brady Carbonneau (24 yards, one touchdown).

For IKM-Manning, Cody Eischeid is a dual catch, rush threat. Eischeid had 100 yards rushing and 43 receiving, along with two touchdowns, in the IKM-Manning win over OA-BCIG.

This will be the first meeting of Logan-Magnolia and IKM-Manning. Logan-Magnolia has played Manning before, the last time was in 1991.

MVAO @ Westwood

The losing streak for Westwood continues, following their 82-6 blowout courtesy of Woodbury Central, last Friday. Beau Metcalf had the lone touchdown in the game for Westwood.

MVAO started their season strong with a 49-6 win against West Monona. Ryan Dougherty scored three touchdowns and 109 yards rushing to lead MVAO.

This will be the third straight season Westwood and MVA play each other. Westwood is 0-4 in the series against MVAO. Last year, MVAO won 35-12.

Missouri Valley @ West Monona

Both teams had rough week one losses, which were mentioned above. Neither will want to go 0-2 as district play approaches, especially West Monona.

West Monona will have their first district game against Logan-Magnolia. They’ll no doubt need a win to avoid the concern of starting the season 0-3.

Austin Reitz will be a player to watch for West Monona. The sophomore had 80 yards rushing in the loss to MVAO.

Shenandoah @ Riverside

Shenandoah picked up the close win over East Mills last week. Jackson Baker’s 42-yard touchdown pass to Sam Kroepel and the field goal by Jose Rendon gave the Mustangs the edge in the end.

Riverside’s opener was a little rough as they lost to Audubon, 32-7. Clay Harris had the lone touchdown of the game for Riverside as he finished with 72 yards.

This is the first meeting between Shenandoah and Riverside since 2007. The Mustangs have won three of four, including the last two by three points or less.

Riverside will try to avoid starting 0-2 before their first district game against East Mills.

Underwood @ Tri-Center

It is indeed a match-up of the conference rivals for this non-district game. The last few ears, Underwood has had the edge, but last season Tri-Center knocked off the Eagles, 33-29. Tri-Center’s win last season was their first against Underwood since 2003.

The Trojans started the 2012 season with a 53-14 win over A-H-S-T. Ben Wellman was the star of the show for Tri-Center with his 167 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Underwood’s season started rough as they lost 34-12 to Treynor. Austin Asbra, a player to watch, finished the Treynor game with 75 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
