Football Round-Up: FM wins in offensive battle

Fremont-Mills 80, East Mills 49

Fremont-Mills won the district 8 title Friday night when they picked up the  80-49 win over the East Mills Wolverines.

The Knights took the lead and held on. The closest East Mills got was nine points in the third quarter. Fremont-Mills pulled away, starting late in the third quarter.

It was a big night for running back Nate Meier as he had 500 yards rushing, which is a new state record, as well as nine touchdowns.

AJ Scarborough scored the other touchdown for Fremont-Mills as he finished with three carries for 78 yards.

For East Mills, Luke Schafer had a big night with passing as he completed 28 passes out of 45 attempts for 336 yards and five touchdowns. Schafer also had a rushing touchdown in the game.

Daniel Duysen caught three of those touchdown passes from Schafer as the senior finished with 11 catches for 168 yards. Nick Pittmon and Kaleb Richter caught the other two passes.

Fremont-Mills finished the regular season with an 8-0 record and 6-0 in the district. East Mills ended the regular season with an 8-1 record and 5-1 in the district.

Both teams will be home Wednesday night for their first playoff games. East Mills will host Boyer Valley, while Fremont-Mills takes on Woodbine.

Griswold 57, Clarinda Academy 8

The Griswold Tigers finished over .500 for the season with their Friday night win over Clarinda Academy.

Garrett Muhlbauer and Chase Jahnke each ran for three touchdowns in the win. Muhlbauer in particular rushed 18 times for 206 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown run. Muhlbauer finished the regular season with 1,145 yards rushing, which led the district.

Jahnke rushed eight times for 89 yards. Jahnke finished the year with 710 yards rushing and eight touchdowns.

Kenneth Clary had a 100-yard rushing night, finishing with 105 yards on five carries with a 40-yard touchdown.

Tri-Center’s win over Audubon kept the Tigers from getting into the state playoffs.

Sidney 53, Villisca 0

The Villisca Blue Jays finished their 2011 season with an 0-9 record, following their shutout loss to the Sidney Cowboys.

It’s the first winless season for Villisca since 2006.

For Sidney, it’s their first shutout this season and their first since Oct. 16, 2009 when they defeated South Page.

The Cowboys had clinched fourth place in district 8 Oct. 14. Sidney will make a road trip Wednesday as they face Glidden-Ralston in the first round of the state playoffs.

Nishnabotna 47, Essex 32

The Nishnabotna Blue Devils closed out the season with their second straight district win.

Essex meanwhile finishes their season with a sixth straight loss.
Neither team qualified to make the state playoffs.
