Essex wallops Nishnabotna to stay in Corner race
ESSEX — Every win is important in the Corner Conference, and that certainly was the case for the Essex Trojanettes Friday night.
Essex (6-4) defeated Nishnabotna 14-2 to stay right in the hunt for the Corner Conference title.
Essex won the game in three innings, scoring four runs each in the first two and six in the third to get the win.
The heart of the line-up each had two-hit games, led by Kym Graham, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Bethany Johnson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Ausha Gay had the same stat line as Johnson, but also added a double for her efforts.
Daiton Martin scored three runs as she went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and a walk.
Sara Skalberg was 1-for-2 with two runs, while Jescenia Mosley went 1-for-3 with two runs. Both Skalberg and Mosley had doubles, as did Amber Ohnmacht (1-for-3) and Ciara Burnison (1-for-2).
The victory comes a day after Essex lost 15-2 in four innings to Treynor.
Essex scored runs on sacrifice flies in both the first and fourth inning. Martin went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. Bethany Johnson scored the other run, thanks to a Mosley sacrifice fly.
Essex’s loss to Treynor won’t hurt, as the game was non-conference.
The win keeps the Trojanettes (3-1) a half game behind Stanton (4-1) for second. Both teams are a full game back of Fremont-Mills, who currently sits at 3-0 in the conference.
With doubleheaders Monday and Tuesday night against both teams, movement in the standings is possible for Essex.
Essex played Stanton Monday night. Results weren’t available as of press time.
The Trojanettes will be home Tuesday night for a doubleheader with Fremont-Mills. The action starts at 6 p.m.
