Dr. Merlyn “Mert” Knudson, 87
Dr. Merlyn D. “Mert” Knudson, DVM, 87, of Red Oak, a respected veterinarian, breeder of schnauzers and dachshunds, and lover of travel and adventure, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at his home in Red Oak, surrounded by his spouse, James Davis, and friends.
Born on May 4, 1937, in Clay Center, Neb., to Raymond and Lorine (Sterkel) Knudson, Mert was raised on a farm near Nodaway, where he developed a love for animals and the rural lifestyle. He graduated as valedictorian from Nodaway High School, before attending Iowa State University, where he majored in Animal Husbandry and earned his veterinary degree. Mert served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war. After completing his studies, Mert returned to Red Oak and began his veterinary career under the mentorship of Dr. Eugene Ingmand. In time, he took over the practice, becoming the owner where he dedicated himself to the care of animals, mentoring and inspiring students until his retirement in 2018. Mert’s love for animals, combined with his commitment to his patients, made him a beloved figure in Red Oak and surrounding communities.
Mert was also an enthusiast of travel and adventure. He and Jim experienced the cultures and traditions of the many destinations in the U.S. and around the globe they visited. Mert had a special fondness for skiing, particularly in Summit County, Colorado. His passion for skiing took him to many parts of the world, where he relished the thrill of the slopes with his friends. He was always seeking new experiences, whether in travel, culture, or outdoor activities.
An avid supporter and collector of art, Mert supported the Wilson Center, the Blue Barn, and Gallery 1516, among many other organizations and artists.
On May 1, 2019, Mert was united in marriage to Jim Davis in Omaha, Neb. Together, they shared a life full of love, travel, and shared experiences. Mert was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lorine Knudson, and his sister, Sherrill.
He is survived by his loving spouse, Jim Davis of Red Oak; two brothers, Lowell (Nancy) Knudson of Springfield, Mo., and Jerry (Diane) Knudson of Greensboro, Ga.; nieces and nephews, a host of extended family, friends, and beloved patients.
May Mert’s joy and enthusiasm of life, culture and art give strength to those who mourn.
