Downtown clean up day set

Volunteers are needed for a Red Oak Clean Up (ROC-U) event from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 17. Interested parties are asked to meet at 8 a.m. at the city lot on the northwest corner of Fountain Square Park, stop by the Red Oak Chamber and Industry Association to sign up or call Cynthia Bangston at 360-239-1109.

Project coordinators for ROC-U are Cynthia Bangston, and Sharon Bradley and Maggie McQuown. The project calls for volunteers to work together with civic organizations and businesses to clean up the 27 blocks between First Street and Sixth Street and Washington Street to Hammond Street. No work will be done at Fountain Square Park itself, said Bradley.

Not only will trash be picked up, but also sidewalks and the area along street curbs and streets will be swept and/or blown free of dirt and debris from the winter.

“There will be nine captains to help coordinate the work,” explained Bangston. “We would like for them to work with teams of at least four volunteers each.”

Vounteers are asked to bring brooms, leaf blowers, dustpans, and a wagon or rolling garbage can to help transport the full trash bags to the collection location. Work gloves are recommended.

Snacks, water, hand sanitizer and masks will be provided. Volunteers can work the entire morning or just for a couple hours. The rain date is April 24.
